In a bustling corner of Mirpur 10, Dhaka, a unique initiative is inspiring citizens to embrace the joy of planting trees. The Tk 30 Tree Fair, organised by Bangladesh National Nursery and led by Kawsar Saki, offers an affordable opportunity to make the city greener. This thoughtful event aims to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and encourage everyone to contribute to forestation efforts.
Kawsar Saki, the driving force behind this initiative, explains the origins of the fair:
"I have a nursery business, and all along, I've always wanted to contribute to forestation. In 2020, an NGO approached me with a proposal to sell plants for Tk 20. They were looking for a nursery owner willing to offer plants at such a low price. But no one agreed, as rearing seedlings and managing a nursery requires a lot of investment," he recalls.
Despite the financial challenges, Saki was inspired by the idea and decided to take a chance. "When they shared their idea with me, I thought, why not give it a try? This is how the story of the Tk 30 Tree Fair began," he says.
Since 2023, Saki has been organising the fair independently, and the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. "The community support has been great, and it motivates us to keep going. We are even planning to hold another fair soon at Dhanmondi Rabindra Shorobor," he shares enthusiastically.
Located near House 05, Block B, Road 7, Section 10, opposite Shahid Minar Field, the fair is easily accessible to visitors from all walks of life. Running from December 13 to December 19, the event welcomes everyone between 9 AM and 9 PM.
With saplings priced at just Tk 30, this initiative makes planting trees affordable and accessible, encouraging people to add greenery to their homes, balconies, and neighbourhoods.
The fair offers a variety of plants, from flowering species to fruit-bearing saplings, suitable for both decorative and practical purposes. Visitors can also seek advice from nursery experts present at the event, ensuring that each sapling thrives once it's taken home.
Kawsar Saki's commitment to this cause goes beyond Dhaka. "Besides Dhaka, we have also organised this fair in Narayanganj. Recently, we've been invited to host a fair in Cumilla, and the District Commissioner has offered to help us with the initiative," he reveals.
Bangladesh faces numerous environmental challenges, from rising pollution levels to the rapid loss of green spaces. The Tk 30 Tree Fair addresses these issues by making it easier for individuals to contribute to the environment.
Planting a tree might seem like a small act, but collectively, it can have a significant impact on reducing carbon dioxide levels, improving air quality, and supporting biodiversity. As Saki explains, "My goal is to create a culture of planting trees and caring for nature. It's not just about selling plants; it's about inspiring people to be part of something bigger."
So, if you're a city-dweller, don't miss the chance to visit the Tk 30 Tree Fair. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a novice, this initiative welcomes everyone to play a role in greening the city.
