Comically Drawn-inspiring to be inspired
And let's not forget the merchandise, from posters to figures to custom art; nothing is too big or too small for the crowds of fans!
Social media has made it easier to connect and showcase an individual's work, and Comically Drawn- a venture from Puja Sarkar, is already making the rounds in this virtual gallery. For its beginnings, Sarkar's own words are the best to relate, "It just happened."
As a fresher at BRAC University, with her major in English, Sarkar is drawing her way up the creative ladder with known comic book characters. Her style incorporates characters in signature poses with her own unique touch. What will draw in the viewer is her use of monochromes as an expressive medium plus her minimalist touch of colour.
Neil Gaiman fans will come to love her rendition of the Sandman, and its various characters. Batman and other popular DC comic characters are her favourite characters to work on as well. Being a Neil Gaiman fan, she received an immense morale boost when the artist himself praised her on Facebook in November 2017.
She credits Wasif Noor, another comic book enthusiast who does his fair share of inked masterpieces, as her mentor and the guide she needed to make it this far. For inspirations, she zeroes in on Neil Gaiman as well as Chris Riddell and Jim Lee and many more.
The page Comically Drawn works not only as a portfolio, but also as a selling point for her work. Sarkar has sold a few of her works, one of the very first being a Pulp Fiction poster. It is her version of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson holding their pistols in their most iconic pose. She mainly takes in requests for comic characters, plus occasional movie or series characters, and clearly states that she does not do sketches or realism.
Sarkar's greatest strength lies in being upfront about what she can do and what she has yet to achieve. Where many artists struggle to express themselves both on and off paper, she is able to put her voice forward with her work through Comically Drawn. For 2018, Comically Drawn will have more variety and not only be limited to black and white. Also, Manga (Japanese comics) art will be featured in Comically Drawn this year.
To sum up, Comically Drawn is a labour of love and it shows. Coming from a person who is inspired by the greatest of comic artists and illustrators in modern pop culture, Comically Drawn is sure to occupy a corner in the comic lover's heart!
