Moments after a serious tragedy was averted in front of Suhrawardy hospital: The traffic sergeant taking apparently his daughter to school on the motorcycle was riding on the wrong side of the road when the car, making a legal U-turn, managed to stop inches away from the bike. Nevertheless, traffic cops present in the vicinity penalised the car driver. The traffic sergeant’s bike is not even registered. It just says “DMP E.N: 364311” on the number plate. Garbage and industrial waste make Chaktai Khal (canal) look like a stream of filth. Land grabbing and siltation choke this and other canals in Chattogram, resulting in waterlogging in the port city. The canals were once used for transporting goods. Now, boats can ply only during high tides. This photo was taken from Chaktai Khal at Fisherighat on Saturday. Photo: Rajib Raihan

Doctors said the number of Covid-19 patients have fallen significantly, but about 300-400 people recovering from the disease throng the hospital for post-Covid issues every day. Photo: Anisur Rahman

A policeman putting a lock on a battery-powered rickshaw for using the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the capital’s Matuail area. Witnesses said police let the rickshaws go after realising a certain amount of fines. Initiatives to keep such three-wheelers off the highways have borne little fruit. Photo: Amran Hossain
