Sagar-Runi murder: Hasina govt obstructed probe

Alleges complainant's lawyer
Sagar-Runi murder

The investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi was obstructed by high-ranking officials of the Sheikh Hasina-led government, alleged Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir, the principal lawyer for the complainants, today.

"Even after 13 years, the mystery behind the murder remains unsolved, which is a major failure at the state level," he said while talking to reporters at the Supreme Court premises.

He said the current government has formed a high-powered task force under the High Court's direction to investigate the case, and the task force is expected to submit its report by April 4.

"Officials in the task force have contacted relevant individuals, including family members and lawyers, and have examined scientific and forensic evidence. From what we know, there has been significant progress," he said.

Shishir Manir also said the investigation process was hindered in the past. Also, the investigation couldn't be completed over the past 13 years due to a lack of goodwill and competent manpower, he added.

"Important evidence and documents have gone missing during this period, making the investigation even more challenging. Despite this, we hope the officials will submit a credible and acceptable report to the High Court," said the lawyer.

During the press briefing, Meherun Runi's brother and complainant in the case, Nawsher Alam Roman, accused the Hasina-led government of involvement in the murder.

However, Sagar and Runi's son, Megh, said, "I see a light of hope this time. Hopefully, something good will happen," he said.

Sagar, news editor at Maasranga TV, and Runi, senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented West Rajabazar flat on February 11, 2012, while their five-year-old son Megh was at home.

Nawsher filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station without naming any suspects.

DRU STAGES PROTEST

Dhaka Reporters Unity today issued an ultimatum, demanding that the investigation report be submitted by March 2. Otherwise, they threatened tougher programmes, including beseiging the Chief Adviser's residence.

Speaking at a rally in front of DRU, its president Abu Saleh Akon said they will submit a memorandum to the Home Ministry, demanding justice in the case.

Journalist leaders at the rally also urged the government to declare February 11, the day of the murder, as "Journalist Protection Day".
