A Chattogram court today ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation to reinvestigate the case filed against two police officials over the custodial torture of a student in 2023.

They are Nazim Uddin, then officer-in-charge of Panchlaish Police Station and Abdul Aziz, sub-inspector of the same police station.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sarkar Hasan Shahriar passed the order after victim Syed Mohammad Mustakim filed a no-confidence petition expressing discontent over the investigation report earlier submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department in the torture case.

Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation's Secretary General Zia Ahsan Habib said," CID submitted the final report in the case in 2023 after investigation but we, on behalf of the victim, filed a non-confidence petition against the CID's report with a metropolitan magistrate court, but the court rejected the appeal.

Following another appeal to Chattogram session judge's court, the court finally passed the reinvestigate order for PBI today," he added.

On February 20, 2023, Syed Mohammad Mustakim filed the custodial complaint with the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Begum Zebunnesa.

According to the complaint, he was arrested by OC Nazim during a protest programme against the increased cost of kidney dialysis in Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on January 10 of the same year. Mustakim alleged he was brutally tortured that after his arrest. He said he was beaten inside the police station.

Taking the allegation into cognizance, the court asked the Special Superintendent of Police of Chattogrom CID to record the complaint as a case against then OC and SI and submit a probe report before a court.
