RCY empowering JU students through volunteer work
Jahangirnagar University became the first university in Bangladesh to get the permission to set up a Red Crescent Youth (RCY) at its campus in August 2018.
RCY's work includes special campaigning and training, and awareness programmes about mental health, organised by RCY students working voluntarily and preparing themselves to respond capably in emergency situations.
Older dorms of the university have no emergency lanes and fire safety equipment in the event of fires or earthquakes.
The RCY has trained 41 students on first aid at the university so far, along with 61 workers of JU transport office, especially drivers and helpers.
Nakshi Sarkar Tinni, a student from biotechnology and genetic engineering who has taken training from there, said, "We have an emergency response team specially trained for crises.
"Recently, there was a medical emergency and we took the patient immediately to the nearest hospital. During the admission test, we provide services to guardians of the examinees who come from different parts of our country," she added.
Mohibur Raouf Shaibal, in charge of Red Crescent Youth (JU) and also a teacher of drama and dramatics department, said," We want to open this platform in every university. Disaster management, volunteering should not be only co-curricular activities, rather it should be included in the academia of every university."
Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Nurul Alam appreciated their work and said, "Blood donation camp, emergency response team is helping students who need immediate help."
