93 killed on day of carnage; AL defers Monday's programmes
At least 93 people, including 14 policemen, were killed and dozens injured as fierce clashes took place in different areas in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh on the first day of the non-cooperation movement announced by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.

AL postpones scheduled programmes for Monday
The ruling party will not hold a mourning procession, as previously scheduled, from the Engineers Institute to Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi-32 today.
The party will also not observe the programmes marking the 75th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The party postponed its scheduled programmes as the government has imposed an indefinite curfew, according to AL sources.
3 more deaths reported in Gazipur, Joypurhat and Keraniganj
Three more people died in the violence between police and ruling party men on one side and protesters on the other in separate incidents in Keraniganj, Gazipur and Joypurhat.
In Gazipur's Sreepur upazila, a 22-year-old was killed in a clash last night.
The deceased was identified as Tofazzal Hossain, a mason of Jainabazar area of Sreepur, reports our local correspondent.
Talking to this correspondent, Sreepur Upazila Family and Planning Officer Pranay Das, said, “The victim's family told me that Tofazzal died as protesters clashed with a group in Jainabazar area around 8:30pm.”
In Joypurhat, the deceased was local AL leader Md Rafiquzzaman Rahim, 53.
Police said protesters gathered at Zero point in Joypurhat from this morning. Around 11:00am, thousands of protesters brought out a procession. When they reached the Awami League office, brickbats were thrown from the AL office, in retaliation, the protesters also threw brickbats.
Later, police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. The incident left over 50 people injured.
Joypurhat AL President Arifur Rahman Rocket said Rahim was hit by brick chunks and injured. He was first taken to Joypurhat Modern Hospital but later he died on the way to Bogura for better treatment.
It was previously reported that Nazmul Sarkar Bishal, 22, died on the spot during the clash.
In Keraniganj, an AL leader named Ifti was killed in a clash, police said.
12 dead in Dhaka on day of carnage
A total of 12 people were killed in Dhaka city today as Awami League activists and police clashed with protesters under the banner of anti-discrimination student movement.
Tahidul Islam, 22, Abdullah Siddique, 22, Ramizuddin Rouf, 24, Selim, 40, Riazuddin, 36, and four others who are yet to be identified were brought dead or died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
Another youth named Rezaur Rahman, 23, was brought dead at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, from Gulistan area around 12noon, said Abdul Ahad, Ansar commander of the Mitford Hospital.
An unidentified person was brought dead to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
One killed in clash between protesters, AL men in Cox’s Bazar
A person was killed and 10 others injured in a clash between protesters and local Awami League men in Cox’s Bazar town this afternoon.
Ashiqur Rahman, resident medical officer at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, confirmed the death to our staff correspondent.
Identify of the deceased could not be known immediately.
At least 10 injured are receiving treatment at the hospital, he added.
'March to Dhaka' programme tomorrow
The anti-discrimination student movement has announced a "March to Dhaka" programme tomorrow (Monday) to press home for their one-point demand: the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.
They called upon students and people across the country to join the march to Dhaka.
One killed in Bhola as AL men, police clash with protesters
One person was killed as Awami League men and police clashed with protesters in Bhola.
The deceased has been identified as Md Jasim, 40, an umbrella maker, confirmed Bhola Sadar UNO Sajal Kumar Shil.
He died while undergoing treatment at Bhola General Hospital in the afternoon.
Witnesses said at least 14 people, also with bullet injuries, were admitted to the hospital.
Several government and private establishments, including an AL office, were vandalised and torched during the violence.
Three killed, over 50 hurt in Sherpur
Three people were killed and more than 50 others injured as protesters clashed with police and Awami League men in Sherpur district town.
Md. Anwar Hossain, superintendent of Sherpur General Hospital, confirmed the three deaths.
Two of the deceased were identified as Tushar, 24, a resident of the district town and Mahbub, 30, of Pakuria Chaitankhila in Sadar upazila.
8 killed in Lakshmipur in clashes between protesters and AL men
Eight people were killed and more than 50 injured in clashes between ruling party activists and protesters of the anti-discrimination student movement in different areas Lakshmipur today.
Sohel Rana, additional superintendent of Lakshmipur police, confirmed the news.
Three of the victims were identified as Osman Gani, 23, Md Kawsar, 26, and Afnan, 22, said District Police Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Sohel Rana confirmed the news to The Daily Star.
3 killed in Kishoreganj
Three people, including a woman, were killed and over 100 injured in a clash between protesters and Awami League activists in Kishoreganj this afternoon.
Eyewitnesses reported that the AL office was vandalised and set on fire during the conflict. Subsequently, the protesters blocked the road for three hours with a protest procession.
13 cops killed at police station in Sirajganj, 1 in Cumilla
At least 13 police personnel of the Enayetpur Police Station in Sirajganj were killed as criminals attacked the station today.
Police Headquarters confirmed news of the death in a press release.
PHQ added that one other member of Eliotganj Highway Police in Cumilla was killed in violence.
6 AL leaders beaten to death in Narsingdi
At least six Awami League leaders were beaten to death and several others injured in a clash between Awami League and protesters of the anti-discrimination quota movement in Narsingdi today.
The incident took place in front of the Boro Masjid next to the Madhavadhi Municipal Building in Narsingdi around 1:00 pm, reports our correspondent quoting KM Shahidul Islam Shohag, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle).
At least 3 killed in the capital
At least three people including a student were killed during clashes in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi, Gulistan and Farmgate areas today.
The victims are Abdullah Siddique, 23, Tahidul Islam, 22, and Rezaur Rahman, 23.
Another youth named Rezaur Rahman, 23, was brought dead at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, from Gulistan area around 12noon, said Abdul Ahad, Ansar commander of the Mitford Hospital.
3 shot dead in Sylhet
Two people were shot dead and at least 25 including policemen and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were injured in a clash in Sylhet’s Golapganj upazila around 2:30pm today, the first day of the non-cooperation movement called by students.
The deceased were identified as Taj Uddin, 43, of Dharabohor village in the upazila, Minhaj Ahmed, 26, a resident of Dattarai village, and Sunny Ahmed, 18, a resident of Amura area of the upazila.
Gopalganj Upazila Health Officer Sudorshon Sen confirmed the information to our local correspondent.
However, police are yet to confirm information of the deaths.
Govt announces three-day public holiday from tomorrow
The government has announced a three-day general holiday on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for ensuring public safety amid the ongoing violent protests across the country.
One killed in Barishal
One person was killed in a clash between protesters and ruling party men in Barishal city this afternoon.
The deceased, identified as Tutul Chowdhury, was an Awami League leader of Ward 12 in Barishal.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 12:30pm when some protesters attacked him with sharp weapons near Nobogram Road.
He was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in critical condition and died an hour later.
Hospital sources reported that at least 35 people were admitted following the clash.
8 killed in Feni
At least eight people from both sides were killed in clashes in Feni as Awami League men attacked protesters today.
Several people were injured in this incident, reports our correspondent.
The attack took place in the Mohipal area of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway after 2:00pm.
Eightbodies were taken to Feni General Hospital from the spot. Their identities were not immediately available.
Four people were killed in clashes between ruling party men and protesters of the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur city today.
Abdul Jalil, an official at the morgue of the Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, confirmed two of the deaths in the clash to our Dinajpur correspondent.
The identities of the two deceased could not be found immediately.
Meanwhile, two more people were killed in a clash between the AL activists and the protesters in the city this afternoon.
The two deceased are -- Haradhan Roy, president of the Parshuram Thana Awami League and councillor of Ward 4 in Rangpur City Corporation, and his driver whose name could not be known.
Protesters declare long march to Dhaka on Monday
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement today declared a long march to Dhaka for Monday. At first, they had declared that the programme would be held on Tuesday, but later changed their decision.
Asif Mahmud, one of the key coordinators of the platform, confirmed the programme to The Daily Star today.
Curfew has been imposed indefinitely starting from 6:00pm today in Dhaka and other divisional cities, district towns and all city corporations, and it will remain in effect until otherwise directed.
Previously, the Home Minister announced yesterday that curfew would remain relaxed from 6am to 9pm starting from Sunday.
At least five people were killed in clashes in Sirajganj town today.
AFM Obaidul Islam, deputy civil surgeon of Sirajganj, confirmed that a man was brought dead at Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College, and four others were declared dead or brought dead at Raiganj Upazila Health Complex.
One killed in Cumilla
One person was killed in a clash between protesters and ruling Awami League men today at Debidar upazila in Cumilla .
The deceased was identified as Md Rubel, 33, said Sohel Rana, a doctor at the emergency department, Debidar Upazila Health Complex.
Man's bullet-hit body brought to Dhamrai health complex
A bullet-hit body of an unidentified man has been found at Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex in Dhaka.
Ahmedul Haque Titas, in-charge doctor of the health complex, said some men brought the body, aged around 30, at the hospital at 1:20pm and left.
Bullet wounds are present on the back of the body, the doctor added.
One killed in Rangpur
One person was killed in a clash between ruling party men and protesters of the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur’s City Bazar Road
Abdul Jalil, an official at the morgue of the Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, confirmed the death to our Dinajpur correspondent.
Zahid Faruk’s house vandalised in Barishal
State Minister for Water Resource Ministry Zahid Faruk’s house was vandalised in Barishal around 12:30pm today. AL sources said that angry protesters entered the house, smashed furniture, and attacked the house staff.
Protesters also vandalised vehicles in the city’s Chaumatha area, including an ambulance.
AL activists brought out a protest procession, and smashed window panes of Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city’s Sadar Road.
Facebook, WhatsApp reportedly inaccessible in the country
Facebook and WhatsApp, two widely used social media platforms, are reportedly inaccessible in Bangladesh as of today. Users across the country have reported issues with accessing both platforms, with attempts resulting in error messages and connection failures.
Three dead in Pabna, 3 in Bogura; today's death total rises to 8
At least five people, three in Pabna and two in Bogura, were killed in clashes involving protesters, AL men and police today.
The total death toll in the violence rose to eight today.
In Bogura, one of the two victims was shot dead as police opened fire on protesters in Dupchanchia upazila around 11:00am.
Bullet-hit Manirul Islam, 24, was brought dead at Dupchanchia Upazila Health Complex, said Shamsunnaher, upazila health and family planning officer. She later confirmed death of another person.
In Pabna, at least three people were killed and 50 others injured during a clash between protestors and ruling party men at Traffic Mor around 11:30am.
At least 42 rushed to CMCH with bullet wounds
At Chittagong Medical College Hospital, the number of injured in the clash at New Market intersection of the port city increased to 42.
Most of the injured were shot, said Tuhin Shubhra Das, emergency medical officer of the CMCH.
Meanwhile, clashes and chase and counter chases are going on in different areas in the city including New Market, Amtol, Tin Poler Matha areas. A section of protesters took position in Wasa Intersection at present.
Operators receive order for mobile internet shutdown
The officials of mobile phone operators said they have got directive to shut down 4G services.
Clash near AL office in Dhanmondi, sounds of gunfire reported
A clash broke out between protesters and ruling party men near the Awami League office in the capital’s Dhanmondi area today.
The clash began around 12:30pm when protesters from Dhanmondi-2 area moved to Dhanmondi-3.
According to our correspondent, the clash was still ongoing as of 1:00pm. Sounds of gunshots and stun grenades have been reported at the scene.
Faridpur’s AL office vandalised and 8 to motorcycles torched
Faridpur district Awami League office was vandalised while its BCL office was torched on the first of non-cooperation movement today.
The protesters also set fire to eight to ten motorcycles in front of the district AL office on Hasibul Hasan Lablu Road in Niltuli area, our local correspondent reports.
Police fired rubber bullets, sound grenades and teargas shells when the Kotwali Police Station was attacked around 11:30am.
Most shops, bank branches seen closed in Dhaka
Most of the shops and malls situated near the main roads in Dhaka are closed now amid the protest of students and mass people.
New Market, Dhaka's most popular shopping place, remained closed.
One dead in clash at Magura; vehicles torched at BSMMU
At least three people were killed and at least 28 others were injured during a clash between protesters on one side, and police and ruling party men on the other in Magura this morning.
Shahina Begum, a nurse of Magura District Sadar Hospital, said three persons were either brought dead or declared dead at the hospital.
They are: Farhad, 23, Rabbi, 35, and Al Amin.
A total of 28 persons took treatment at the hospital and two of them had gunshot injuries, she said
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Azizul Haque, a staffer of Magura Sadar Hospital, said one person died and many others including police personnel were injured.
“We are struggling to give them treatment,” he said.
Police, stick-wielding people going together towards Shahbagh
Hundreds of people wielding sticks and almost as many police personnel were walking through Kazi Nazrul Islam towards Karwan Bazar intersection 12:50pm.
Unidentified people torched the Khulna zilla parishad office around 12:30pm today. The fire was still burning as of 12:45pm.
Protesters clash with police in Sylhet
The protesters and police clashed around 12:00pm, half an hour after the hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Court Point area in Sylhet city as part of their non-cooperation movement.
During the clash, police fired shotgun, tear shells and sound grenade to disperse the protesters, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Shwecchashebak League members were also seen clashing with protesters.
Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury and other top BNP leaders also brought out a procession.
All shopping malls, shops and other establishments were seen shut since the morning.
No long-distance or inter-district buses left the city since the morning except some local vehicles are seen plying in other areas of the city.
Protesters, police clash on CMM court premises; 4 police vehicles
A clash erupted between police and protesters at the CMM court premises in the capital today, halting court proceedings as of 12:10pm.
Our reporter on the spot said over a hundred protesters, along with pro-BNP lawyers, broke the collapsible gate of the court, which the police had cordoned off since morning.
The protesters threw brick chunks targeting the doors and windows in the court area.
Two prison vans and two police cars were vandalised by unidentified people during the clash.

Vehicles vandalised, torched at BSMMU
A number of vehicles at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) were torched this morning by unidentified people.
Wielding sticks, several were seen vandalising private cars, ambulances, motorcycles, and buses on the hospital premises around 11:30am.
Our reporter from the spot said there was a chase and counter-chase between the Awami League activists and protesters. At one stage, the AL men took shelter at BSMMU.
2 killed in protester-AL clash in Munshiganj
At least two persons were killed and 20 others were injured in a clash between protestors and Awami League men in Munshiganj town around 10:45am today.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The clash broke out around 10:45am near Super Market area.
Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal, superintendent of Munshiganj General Hospital, said two persons were brought dead and many other injured are being treated at the hospital.
AL men take position at Mirpur-10 intersection
Awami League men took position at Mirpur-10 intersection of the capital from early morning, apparently to counter protesters demanding resignation of the government.
Several hundred members of AL and its associated bodies under the leadership of Mainul Hossain Khan, the lawmaker from Dhaka-14, were chanting slogans against Jamaat and Shibir.
Thousands of protesters demonstrate at Shahbagh for one-point demand
Thousands of protesters have gathered at the Shahbagh intersection in the capital this morning and blocked it to press home their one-point demand -- resignation of the government.
They were seen chanting slogans like "Lorai, Lorai, Lorai Chai, Lorai Kore Bachte Chai," "Dofa Ek Dabi Ek, Sheikh Hasinar Padatyag".

Protesters have been gathering at Science Lab intersection of the capital on the first day of the non-cooperation movement announced by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.
The protesters started to gather in the area since 10:00am today, chanting slogans like "Ek Dui Tin Char, Sheikh Hasina Godi Chhar," "Esho Bhai Esho Bon Gore Tuli Andolon", "Dofa Ek Dabi Ek, Sheikh Hasinar Podotyag."
Presence of vehicles was very thin onthe adjacent roads.
