Here's what Indian media said on Padma Bridge opening

As an euphoric Bangladesh soaked in the festivity surrounding the Padma Bridge opening today (June 25, 2022), Indian news sites and electronic media gave the event fairly significant coverage – particularly focusing on how it would reduce the distance between Dhaka and Kolkata, and give India easier access to Mongla port.

"Bangladesh has come of age as a huge turnaround story with the formal inauguration of the 6.15-km rail-road bridge on the Padma River on June 25, Saturday," said an India Today report from Dhaka.

It said that for PM Sheikh Hasina, the rosy economic picture emanating from the Padma bridge will come as a shot in the arm in the run up to the national election due in December 2023.

"Despite opposition protests over enforced disappearances and rigged elections, even her critics have admitted that Hasina has a brilliant record of economic growth and human development during her thirteen years in power," according to the report.

Quoting former Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman, India Today said the Padma Bridge, which will now connect the capital Dhaka with all southern districts and the country's second port, Mongla, will contribute 1.2 percent to Bangladesh's annual GDP growth.

A few news sites, including The Hindu online and the Republic TV led the story by carrying the Indian High Commission in Dhaka congratulating the Sheikh Hasina government for the successful completion of Padma Bridge

Hindustan Times carried a video on how the Padma Bridge, inaugurated by Hasina, will reduce the Kolkata-Dhaka train journey by half.
