Injured barking deer rescued from CU lab

A critically injured barking deer (scientific name Muntiacus muntjak) was rescued yesterday morning after it got stuck in the iron grille of an open window at a chemistry laboratory on Chittagong University (CU) campus.

The male deer, about 4 years of age, is now being treated at Chittagong Zoo.

Suman Chowdhury Saleh Ahmed, a laboratory assistant at the Chemistry department, said he opened the lab around 9:30am and noticed the deer caught between iron bars of a grille of an open window. 

Soon after being informed, members of the proctorial body arrived at the lab and rescued the deer with the help of the lab assistant, said Ali Asgar Chowdhury, proctor of CU.

They later sent the animal to Chittagong Zoo for proper treatment, he added. 

Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, deputy curator (acting) of Chittagong Zoo, said the animal's body bore numerous injury marks and it lost a significant amount of blood due to its injuries.

Doctors were able to stop the bleeding and they placed the deer under observation for the next 24 hours.

Dr Shahadat also said, “The deer was critically injured, probably from fight with another deer. Deer fight is common during its mating season.”
