Motorcyclists without helmet will be denied fuel at refueling stations, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said today.

The Dhaka police chief announced the move, that was first introduced in Rangpur to discipline motorcyclists, at a press briefing at DMP media centre.

“We have requested the filling station owners not to sell fuel to the bikers without safety helmets and the pillion must wear helmet as well,” Mia said.

It is part of police’s month-long special traffic management initiative from tomorrow. Additionally, only one pillion passenger will be allowed on motorcycles from now on.

Apart from traffic cops, Rover scouts, girls’ guides and other volunteer organisations will participate in the month-long traffic awareness campaign starting from tomorrow.

It is to be noted that motorcyclists were found to be the most law-violating citizens during Traffic Week in August. More than half of the 56,349 traffic rules violation cases filed during that time were against riders of two wheelers.

Failure to stop at traffic signal, produce valid documents and driving licences, not wearing helmets, and travelling against traffic were the top offences committed by motorcyclists.
