Raptor Squad, Assemble!
Admit it or not – you know you're excited for this movie. While we might have thought that Jurassic Park III was the end of it, Steven Spielberg takes the wheel again as executive producer and gives us Jurassic World, set in the wondrous age of smartphones and holograms.
After the disastrous events that took place in Jurassic Park, Jurassic World has finally managed to get that dream of a theme park going steady. Situated near Costa Rica on an island named Isla Nubar, this dinosaur-themed wonderland has already been up and running successfully for a decade when the movie takes place. In fact, dinosaurs no longer seem to possess the "OMG" factor they once did, so much so that the park is actually in danger of losing profits unless they introduce a new "attraction" every few years to spike attendance rates. Problem is, trying to make dinosaurs more attractive basically means making them more efficient as killing machines. Disregarding the consequences, scientists have greedily pursued the engineering of a hybrid dinosaur -- one unlike anything the world has ever seen.
Chris Pratt plays the role of Owen Grady – a US Navy veteran employed by Jurassic World to document the behaviour of some velociraptors -- and is his usual adorable, slightly badass self. Bryce Dallas Howard takes the part of one Claire Dearing, a senior assets manager who speaks nothing but numbers and statistics. Continuing with this stream of good-looking characters we have the siblings Zach and Gray Mitchell, because no Jurassic movie would be complete without children looking a dinosaur in the eye from an inch away. Zach and Gray are also the nephews of Claire, which is how they come to be on the island to begin with- to spend some quality time with their aunt, running
for their lives away from hybrid dinos. Aww.
The movie is fast-paced and builds up nicely. It has more gasp-worthy moments and jump starts than most recent horror films. I would suggest you avoid watching the trailers -- particularly the second trailer -- in order to get the full impact. It might seem predictable at times, and the humour a bit weak -- but it's easy to forgive it for those moments when the epic ones come along.
You can catch it playing now in 3D at Star Cineplex and Blockbuster Cinemas amidst cries of "Don't go there!" and "He's gonna die!" if you'd like. Be wary of ordering the large popcorn though -- you just might spill it when those 3D scenes come into play without warning.
