CNG drivers clash with cops on Dhaka-Ctg highway
CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers clashed with police on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Narayanganj today during protests against the highway ban.
Initially, they blockaded the highway in Signboard area around 11:00am halting vehicular movement for about an hour, reports our local correspondent.
Locals said a clash ensued when police tried to disperse the blockaders. The protesters hurled chunks of brick on the police.
Police charged batons and fired blank shots to disperse the agitation, Md Mokhlesur Rahman, additional police superintendent of Narayanganj said.
The government banned CNG autos from highways to check the loss of innocent lives in road crashes. The ban, effective from August 1, triggered protests from the vehicle drivers.
