Faruk killing: AL MP Rana sent to jail on surrender

A Tangail court today sent Awami League (AL) lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana to jail after he surrendered before it in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

Judge Abul Mansur Mia of First Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court sent the lawmaker from Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency to jail rejecting his bail prayer after holding a hearing around 11:00am.

Rana surrendered before the court in the morning and sought the bail, reports our Tangail correspondent.

Rejecting the bail petition, the court sent Rana to Tangail District Jail.

Earlier around 7:30am, the AL lawmaker entered the court premises to surrender before it.

A section of AL activists and supporters led by Faruk’s wife Nahar held a procession on the court premises and chanted slogans against Rana and demanded his punishment.

Faruk, the then AL publicity secretary of Tangail district unit, was shot dead on the night of January 18, 2013. Police submitted the charge sheet on February 3 this year.

A Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of the district on April 6 this year issued arrest warrants against 10 fugitives including Rana in the case.

Apart from Rana, the accused in the case are his three brothers -- Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, Jahidur Rahman Khan Kakon, and Saniyat Khan Bappa --  and Rana’s aides Kabir Hossain, Babu Miah, Anisul Islam Raja, Mohammad Ali, Farid Miah and Samir Hossain; and former Jubo League leaders Alamgir Hossain Chan, Nasir Uddin Nuru, Sanwar Hossain and Masudur Rahman.

Of them, Raja, Mohammad Ali, Samir Hossain and Farid Miah are now in jail.

Police on May 20 confiscated moveable assets of the 10 fugitive accused, including Rana and his three brothers.

On May 16, a senior judicial magistrate of the district ordered attachment of assets of Rana, his three brothers and five other persons.

Three days after the killing, Faruk's wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case with Tangail Model Police Station against unidentified criminals.

Police initially investigated the case, which was later shifted to Tangail DB police.

Law enforcers arrested Anisur in March 2014. During interrogation, he disclosed the names of Amanur and his three brothers.
