UIU holds award night of Minds of Society 

Award night of "Minds of Society 2017" was held at United International University auditorium, organised by UIU Social Services Club. 

The champion was Kamrul Hasan Shawon, Ayman Sakib Nuhas, Mahir Ashifur Rahman and Nafis Ul Haque Raeid of Team Hashtag JU from Jahangirnagar University; the first runner-up was AK Ahmed Mostafa, Junayed Rashed, Nazmus Shakib and Zishan Mahmud of Team Opus Magnum from IBA, DU and the second runner-up was Shafiul Azam Shuvo, Sopnil Mottafi Billah, Anik Dey and Shahriar Ahmed of Team Bitarkicks from University of Dhaka. VC of UIU, Prof. Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, Habib Abu Ibrahim, Treasurer, Prof. A.S.M Salahuddin, Registrar, and Manjurul Haque Khan, Director of the Student Affairs of UIU were present at the occasion. 

The guest speakers were Ilias Kanchon, Founder of Nirapod Sarak Chai, Samia Ahmed, Head of Policy Advocacy of WaterAid Bangladesh, Anwar Hossain, Chairman of Society For The Welfare of Autistic Children, Selim Hussain, Chairman of Care for Paws Bangladesh, Engr. Md. Suzan Khandaker, Country Coordinator of Help The Needy Bangladesh, Md. Shahidul Alam, Head of Finance & Admin of Bandhu Social Welfare Society and the guest of honour was Md. Abdulla Hil Kafi, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dhanmondi Zone, DMP.

Bangladeshi student wins Sexton Scholar Award

Dalhousie University, of Canada, recently hosted its annual "Sexton Scholar Award". Named after Frederick H. Sexton from MIT, the award recognises extraordinary academic achievements with a minimum GPA requirement of 3.85 over a full course load span, and on top of that also requiring faculty consent in what is considered to be one of the most challenging disciplines - engineering. 

This year, Bangladeshi student Faisal Mohammed was added to this list of scholars. Faisal Mohammed has been designated as a Sexton Scholar because of his extraordinary academic performance in the field of electrical engineering. He wishes to focus on photonics. He previously finished his diploma from Saint Mary's University, Halifax.

AIUB hosts "HR: Today & Tomorrow"

The Department of Management of American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) organised a 2-day event titled "HR: Today & Tomorrow" on March 29-30, 2017.

The programme was inaugurated by Pro-VC, Prof. Dr. Charles C. Villanueva. He visited the Business Plan Exhibition and HRM Poster Presentation. He was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Nisar Ahmed, Director (MBA Program), Farheen Hassan, Head of Department of Management & HRM, Manzur H. Khan, Director (Office of Student Affairs), distinguished faculty members from the department and other administrative officials.

More than 200 students from the Department of Management & HRM participated in the Business Plan Exhibition, HRM Poster Presentation, Bazaar Bonanza, HR Quiz Competition, multiple workshops and seminars, etc. 

EWU Law Club arranges seminar on proclamation of independence

East West University (EWU) Law Club organised a seminar titled "Proclamation of Independence: Sovereignty and Emergence of Bangladesh" on April 9, 2017.  

Prof. Dr. Tureen Afroz, Chairperson, Department of Law, EWU was the keynote speaker at the seminar. The programme was graced by the presence of freedom fighter Ferdousi Priyabhashini and Shahin Reza Nur, son of the martyred intellectual journalist Sirajul Islam. Ferdousi Priyabhashini asked the youth to take the responsibility of protecting the independence that we gained through bloodshed. Shahin Reza Nur expressed his joy for the fair justice and punishments of war criminals and collaborators. 

Adity Rahman Shah, Moderator of EWU Law Club and Lecturer of the Department of Law also spoke on the occasion. A large number of faculty members and students from the Department of Law were present on the seminar.

IUB hosts National River Olympiad 

The "National River Olympiad: Private University Round" took place at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) on April 1, 2017. Upholding the theme "Know your river, revive it better", the Olympiad was jointly organised by the Environmental Club, IUB, Riverine People and Samakal Shurid Samabesh. 

In the inaugural session, Annisul Huq, Mayor, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) was present as the chief guest while Abdul Hai Sarkar, Chairman, ESTCDT was the special guest and Golam Sarwar, Editor, Daily Samakal was the guest of honour. The session was presided over by Prof. M. Omar Rahman, VC, IUB.

About 200 private university students participated in the daylong programme. After the competition, a panel discussion based on the questions asked by the participants was held where relevant experts of the sector took part. In the closing session, certificates were awarded to 21 winners who will participate in the final round of River Olympiad to be held at the University of Dhaka. 

NUB launches Chinese language and culture teaching programme

Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) launched Chinese language and culture teaching programme on April 1, 2017 at Bangladesh Institute of International Studies (BIIS) Centre. 

Prof. Dr. AYM Abdullah, Chairman, NUB Trust and VC, Northern University of Business and Technology Khulna, was present as chief guest while Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain, VC, NUB chaired the programme. Prof. Dr. Anwarul Karim, Pro-VC and Anwar Hossain, Treasurer, were present as special guests. 

Lt. Col. (Retd.) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, a teacher, researcher and promoter of Chinese language and culture in Bangladesh graced the occasion as guest of honour. The programme was conducted by Lt. Col. (Retd.) Aqtedar Ahmed Siddiqui, Director Development and Int'l Affairs of NUB and NUBTK.

Prof. Dr. AYM Abdullah urged the students to learn Chinese language and be familiar with the culture. He also said that they could get opportunities to pursue higher studies in China if they attain proficiency in the language. 

SEU student achieves Prime Minister Gold Medal Award

Touseef Mashrurul Karim, son of Md. Rezaul Karim, Chairman of Southeast University Trust, received Prime Minister Gold Medal Award for his academic excellence.

Touseef achieved the award at a function held on March 22, 2017 in Prime Minister's Office which was arranged by University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. This award is rendered mainly to the students who secured the highest CGPA or marks in respective faculties of the public universities of Bangladesh. He obtained the highest score in B.Sc. engineering examination in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) in 2014.

It can be mentioned that Touseef is a member of South Asia Foundation (Founder of Southeast University) and Director, Group Reedisha.

VELC organises National Language Fiesta

From March 30 to April 2, Viqarunnisa Noon School and College English Language Club arranged the second Viqarunnisa English Language Club (VELC) National Language Fiesta. The event ran for four days, having set up different classrooms as the locations for the sixteen separate events as part of the event. It included Spelling Bee, Recitation, and Story Weaving which fell into three categories of Junior, Secondary and Senior.

The opening ceremony of the event featured Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam, of Dhaka University as the chief guest, Elita Karim from The Daily Star as special guest and the former Principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Rokeya Akhtar Begum as guest of honour.

The closing ceremony of the festival featured Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Liaquat Ali Lucky as chief guest, Head of Marketing of The Daily Star Md. Tajdin Hassan as special guest and Jamie Mann from British Council as the guest of honour.
