Rab detains 2 ‘frauds’ in Dhaka, Gopalganj
Rapid Action Battalion today claimed to have detained two persons for their alleged involvement in fraudulent activities from Dhaka and Gopalganj.
The detainees were identified as Md Alamin Sheikh Sabuj, 26, and Shahdat Hossain Madhu, 25, both hailing from Moksedpur in Gopalganj, according to a Rab-3 press release.
Sabuj and Madhu were members of a “fraud gang” which collects personal information, photos and videos of people, mostly women, from their social media platform Imo and uses the information to blackmail them, the release read.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Rab-3 detained Sabuj conducting a raid in the area adjacent to Dhaka Medical College yesterday evening.
Gleaning information from him, Rab detained Madhu from Moksedpur in Gopalganj today, according to the release.
Madhu, an owner of a mobile phone servicing shop in Moksedpur upazila in Gopalganj, allegedly copied and stored personal information, photos and videos of people, especially women, when they came to him for their mobile phone servicing.
He then used to send those to Sabuj in Dhaka who later used the information to blackmail the people to extort money from them, Rab said.
The Rab personnel also seized a laptop, a desktop computer and nine mobile phones, and recovered around 15,000 photos of over a hundred women and many pornographic videos from possession of the detainees, it said.
Legal actions were being under way against the detainees.
