40 parties to notify EC on fulfilling conditions

Election Commission has sent letters to the 40 registered political parties asking to know whether the parties have fulfilled the conditions of the registration.

The commission sent letters to the parties issuing a note of warning that if any party fails to carry out the conditions of the registration, concerned party’s registration will be scrapped.

Parties have to inform the commission about their status within 15 working days, according to an official document signed by Abul Kasem,

joint secretary of the EC, on October 31.

“Political parties got registration fulfilling the conditions of registrations. There are some bindings of carrying out some rules. That’s why letter was sent to political parties to know their latest status,” an official of the EC told The Daily Star seeking anonymity.

He also said the commission will take decision after getting reply from the political parties.

According to EC roadmap, EC has responsibility to check whether the

registered political parties have been operating in the light of registration conditions.

Another official said after getting the report, election Commission will check the authenticity of the report of the parties using commission officials and if it finds any differences the commission will serve show cause notice.

The registration process started in 2008 and so far 42 parties got registration but registration f Freedom Party was scrapped in 2009 and

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's registration became illegal in a court verdict in 2013.
