246 BNP men sued in Sylhet, Ctg

Law enforcers today filed several cases against 246 BNP men in Sylhet and Chittagong cities in connection with yesterday’s clash following a court verdict that sentenced five years jail to the party chairperson Khaleda Zia in graft case.

In Sylhet, police filed a case against 197 leaders and activists of BNP and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) this morning in connection of Thursday’s violence and clash at Bandarbazar area in Sylhet following jail sentence of Khaleda Zia.

Anup Chowdhury, a sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station filed the case with the station, said Gousul Hossain, officer-in-charge of the Police Station.

Forty-seven names of BNP-JCD leaders and activists were mentioned in the case, the OC told our Sylhet correspondent.

Police detained 4 persons on Thursday during clash that ensued between the supporters of the BNP and Chhatra League, a student front of the ruling Awami League, around 3:00pm in Sylhet court area, leaving five people including a policeman were injured. Several vehicles including a Police van was vandalized during the clash.

In Chittagong, two cases were filed against 49 BNP men with Kotwali Police Station in connection with Thursday clash in front of party office.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) Jahangir Alam of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) (Kotwali circle) told The Daily Star that one of the cases was filed under Anti-Terrorism Act while another for attacking police.

Chittagong city unit BNP President Dr Shahdat Hossain is among the accused, reports our Chittagong correspondent.

At least 15 persons including eight policemen were injured in a clash at party office Nasiman Bhaban in the city’s Kazir Dewri area centering Khaleda verdict yesterday.

Police also detained 15 BNP men including Dr Shahdat from the city.

In Kushtia, law enforcers detained 27 BNP men today, ASM Mehedi Hasan, superintendent of police in Kushtia, told our local correspondent.

In Bagerhat, four leader and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, a student body of Jamaat-e-Islami were detained in Bagerhat today, repors our local correspondent.
