Controversy follows Ronaldo’s penalty goal
Controversy has followed the bizarre penalty that Cristiano Ronaldo scored at the Bernabeu last night against PSG.
The ball appeared to have popped up slightly right at the moment that Cristiano was about to hit the ball as if by witchcraft.
Initially it was speculated that the forward had disturbed the ball in a way so as to make it pop up just slightly – enabling him to volley it with more force, but slow motion replays later revealed that he had, in fact, disturbed the turf underneath the ball and causing it to move.
Ronaldo’s former Man U teammate Rio Ferdinand suggested that the forward used to do that sort of thing in training.
Weird. Watch the ball just as #Ronaldo goes to strike the penalty seems to hop up off the spot. Did something hit it? #RMAPSG pic.twitter.com/cywKmRhePK; Cahair O'Kane (@CahairOKane1) February 14, 2018
'He used to do that in training you know!' Ferdinand told BT Sport.
'He used to mess about in training and do it but to do it in a game, I’m not saying he means it, but he used to do it. I swear to you, crazy but he used to do it.
Meanwhile Premier League Referee Graham Poll suggested that since the ball moved, the spot kick should have been retaken.
I reckon that penalty was a double touch and should have been disallowed. #Ronaldo; michael owen (@themichaelowen) February 14, 2018
