3 held for 'sexually harassing' univ student in bus
Three transport workers were arrested today in connection with sexually harassing a private university student in a running bus in Dhaka on Saturday.
The arrestees were identified as Nayan, 29, helper of the bus "Great Turag", its conductor Monir, 27, and driver Roman, 27. The bus was also seized around 4:30pm, Abu Bakar Siddiq, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station, told The Daily Star.
The three has confessed to their involvement with the incident in primary interrogation, the OC said.
A case was filed with Gulshan Police Station over sexual harassment of the student yesterday afternoon.
The private university student was allegedly sexually harassed in a running bus on her way to campus in the capital's Uttara on Saturday afternoon.
The victim boarded a "Great Turag" bus on Badda Link road around 1:00pm on Saturday to go to her university, according to the case statement.
When all the other passengers got off the bus at Natun Bazar bus stoppage the helper, contractor and driver of the bust started to sexually assault the victim, read the case statement.
At one stage, the victim managed to fend them off and jump off the bus, says the statement.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of Uttara University gave an ultimatum to the authorities concerned to find out the culprits by 12noon tomorrow.
Otherwise, they will go for tougher protest programs, they said at a press briefing in the city.
Protesting the incident, some hundred students of Uttara University yesterday staged demonstration in Uttara demanding immediate arrest of the bus staffers of "Turag Paribahan".
