Ronaldo’s ballon d’Or snub blamed on mafia
Luka Mordic scooped the Ballon d’or award, ending a decade-long dominance of star duo Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugues star’s sister Elma has reacted angrily to her brother’s Ballon d’Or snub, with “the mafia” blamed for the Juventus star being overlooked in a bizarre rant.
Elma Aveiro posted on Instagram: “Unfortunately this is the world we live in, rotten, with mafia and money. The power of God is a lot greater than all this rottenness. God takes his time but he doesn’t fail.”
Ronaldo’s older sister Katia also had her say, suggesting that Ronaldo is the best player for those who understand football.
“Best player in the world….for those who understand football of course,” she wrote.
The Ballon d'Or was voted for 180 journalists, with Modric receiving 753 points. Ronaldo followed in second place with 476 points, while Antoine Griezmann completed the podium with 414 points.
Kylian Mbappe came fourth with 347 points, before Lionel Messi completed the top five with 280 points. Messi and Ronaldo's tallies combined add up to 756 points, just three more than Modric received on his own. The Croatian took his country to the World Cup final while with Real, won the UEFA Champions League last term alongside Ronaldo, who moved to Juventus this summer.
