Rohingya man killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A Rohingya man, who was accused in a case filed over the murder of a Jubo League leader, was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.

The deceased was identified as Md Hasan, a resident of Teknaf’s Zadimura Rohingya refugee camp in Hnila union of the upazila, our Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports quoting police.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station, said a “gunfight” took place around 1:30am as one of their teams led by Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Rashel Ahmed, also a sub-inspector of the police station, carried out a raid in Jadimura hill area, on information that some accused in the murder case had gathered there.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, resulting in the “gunfight”, he told our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.

After the “gunfight” ended, police found critically injured Md Hasan and took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.

He was later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.

Three police officials – SI Sabbir Ahmed, and constables Bahar Uddin and Liton – were also injured in the gun battle.

Police recovered one firearm, five shotgun cartridges, and eight empty bullet shells from the spot.

Two cases were filed with the police station in connection with the incident, the official also said.

The body of the deceased has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.

Hasan was among the 15 named accused in the case filed over the killing of Faruk, 30, president of Hnila Union Parishad Jubo League, on Thursday night.

Two other accused in the case -- Muhammad Shah and Abdu Shukkur -- were also killed in a reported gunfight with law enforcers on Saturday.
