2013 mayhem in Dhaka: 2 Hefajat leaders remanded

Two Hefajat leaders were placed on different terms of remand today in two separate cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations over the 2013 mayhem in the capital's Shapla Chatter and Paltan areas.

The leaders are former Assistant Organising Secretary of Hefajat Mufti Shakhawat Hossain Razi and former Assistant Secretary General Maulana Monzurul Islam Afendi.

Both Shakhawat and Monzurul were placed on three-day remand each, in a case filed by Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem.

Meanwhile, Shakhawat was also placed on a three-day remand in another case filed with Motijheel Police Station over the same offence.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahinur Rahman passed the remand orders after two investigators produced them before the court with a 14-day remand prayer.

On the other hand, defence submitted two separate petitions seeking bailsand cancellation of the remand prayers saying that they were not involved with the incidents.

Both of them were produced before the court on completion of different terms of remand in two cases filed with Paltan Police Station over 2013 mayhem and March 26 violence in Dhaka.

Monzurul was shown arrested in seven other cases filed with Paltan Police Station over 2013 mayhem in Dhaka, while Shakhawat was shown arrested in four other cases filed with the same police station over the same offenses after separate petitions were submitted with the court.

Mufti Fakhrul Islam, ex-publicity Secretary of Hefajat's Dhaka City unit, was shown arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.

He was earlier placed on a 12-day remand in two cases filed with Paltan Police Station. But in one case, he gave a confessional statement to a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate where he involved several Hefajat leaders, including Junaid Babunagari, with the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.

Shakhawat, Monzurul, Mufti Fakhrul were arrested from the capital on different dates.
