March 26 violence: Mamunul, ‘Shishu Bokta’ Rafiqul sent to jail on completion of remand
Hefajat-e-Islam's former joint secretary general Mamunul Haque and Rafiqul Islam Madani, widely known as "Shishu Bokta", were sent to jail today on completion of their remand. They were produced before a Dhaka court in three cases filed with Motijheel and Paltan police stations over the recent violence in the capital.
Mamunul was produced before the court on completion of his two-day remand in the case filed with Paltan Police Station over the recent violence in Dhaka cenering Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit on March 26.
Rafiqul was produced before the same court following completion of his 11-day remand in two cases filed with the Motijheel Police Station.
The first case was filed against 51 named and 200-300 unnamed leaders and activists of Hefajat with Motijheel Police Station on March 25 with charges of preventing policemen from discharging their duties. Rafiqul 's name was not included in the First Information Report in this case.
The second case was filed on April 8 by Syed Adnan Shanto with the same police station against Rafiqul, alleging anti-state remarks and incitement of chaos.
Rafiqul was also placed on a five-day remand in another case filed with Tejgaon Police Station on April 11 under the Digital Security Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jesi passed the orders after two investigators produced them before her court with two petitions where they appealed to confine the duo until the investigation of the cases is completed, the IOs added.
On the other hand, no lawyers stood in the court to defend them. Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate sent them to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
Mamunul was arrested on April 18 from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa of the capital's Mohammadpur area.
Rafiqul was arrested from the Motijheel area on the same date during a demonstration protesting the visit of Indian PM on the occasion of the golden jubilee of independence, but he was freed later.
On April 7, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Rafiqul from his ancestral home in Netrokona's Purbatola area.
