A long pipe being used to illegally extract sand from the Shitalakhya river in broad daylight near the Kanchpur bridge, right next to the capital. The hunger for sand and unregulated extraction causes significant damage to the banks and affects those who live there. But the sand lifters only stop when the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority occasionally launches a “drive”.

Dhaka has seen a daytime temperature rise of nearly 3 degrees Celcius in the last 20 years, largely as a result of the rapid increase in concrete structures and pavements that retain heat and fall in greenery. Those who have to put in hard labour outdoors during the daytime are naturally the worst sufferers of the phenomenon.
