Women harvest grass pea (locally known as kalai shak), a member of the pulse family Leguminosae. Grown in cold weather, it is very hardy and can germinate and grow on a wide range of soil conditions. The vegetable sells for Tk 50 to Tk 70 per kilogramme. More than 2.5 lakh acres of land was cultivated in 2018-19, generating 1.17 lakh tonnes of the pulse, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
