Tigers failing to duck another disaster
Bangladesh batters have brought back the fresh, traumatic memories for their fans as the hosts repeated a disastrous start in their second innings on day four of the Dhaka Test today.
Just like the first innings on the first day, where the Tigers were 24 for five, the hosts are back to dancing at the Lankans' tunes from the onset of their latest innings. Bangladesh are 34 for four after 13 overs at stumps on the penultimate day, still trailing by 107.
Trailing by 141, the Tigers came out to bat and were cornered in no time. Kasun Rajitha got tantalisingly close to drawing the first blood in the fifth over, having induced an edge off Mahmudul Hasan Joy but the youngster survived as Kamindu Mendis dropped a regulation catch at the slip cordon. Next over, however, Tamim poked at a Asitha Fernando delivery and this time at slips, Kusal Mendis juggled his way to grab the catch.
Tamim departed for naught and became the third Bangladesh opening batter to score a pair, the first of his career. The lefty joins Mahmudul Hasan Joy and former opener Javed Omar Belim who departed for ducks in both innings of a Test match. Joy had bagged the unwanted record this year in South Africa while Javed Omar suffered the sorry fate against India in 2007.
Najmul Hossain Shanto came and went but the batter would feel utterly devastated on being run out, in trying to sneak in a single without any context. However, Joy and Shanto did try to take a cheeky single in the previous over. In the end though, full-credit must be given to Jayawickerama, who was sharp enough to dislodge the stumps from the in-field.
Rajitha struck the next blow and got a deserving wicket as skipper Mominul Haque continued his embarrassing run, having failed to reach double figures in the last seven outings with the bat.
Liton Das joined Mushfiqur Rahim in the middle after Joy became Fernando's second victim of the innings, and the sixth of the match so far.
