Cabinet approves Press Council (Amendment) Act-22 draft in principle

The Cabinet today approved, in principle, a draft of the Press Council (Amendment) Act 2022 – keeping the provision of imposing fine for "false reporting".

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said the Cabinet has rejected the proposal of keeping a fixed amount of fine of Tk 10 lakh.

"The cabinet scrapped the proposal of fixed amount as fine. Instead, the Press Council will fix the amount of fine," he said.

The approval came at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at PMO today (June, 20, 2022).
