2 mortar shells fired from Myanmar fighter jets land in Bandarban
Two more mortar shells fired from Myanmar fighter jets landed inside Bangladeshi territory in Bandarban this (September 3, 2022) morning, police said.
Panic gripped the people when the mortar shells fell inside Ghumdhum union in Naikhyongchari upazila, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
The incident took place at around 9:20am in the morning when two fighter jets and two helicopters appeared between the pillars no 40 and 41 under Reju Amtali BGB BOP at ward no. 8 of Ghumdhum union, Bandarban's Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Tariqul Islam told The Daily Star.
"During the incident, the fighter jets fired around 8-10 mortar shells and the helicopters fired 30-35 rounds shells from the sky. Two mortar shells fired from the fighter planes dropped inside the Bangladeshi territory around 120 meters off pillar no. 40," told the SP.
SP Tariqul Islam said "No causality was reported in this incident but police and security personnel are on high alert, tightening the security in the border."
Quoting local residents, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naikhyongchari Police Station Tanto Saha told The Daily Star, "Myanmar helicopters fired around 300-350 rounds in the morning, creating panic among the locals. The helicopters were again spotted around 12pm between the pillars number 38 and 39 while the choppers fired 30-35 rounds that time."
"Sporadic mortar shells were fired from Muringajhiri Camp and Tumbru Right Camp," he added.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will summon Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh Aung Kyaw Moe again tomorrow to lodge strong protest regarding the matter, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, reports UNB.
Earlier on August 28, two mortar shells landed in the same area.
