Mental strength is the weapon of the successful. Many feel that this is something people are born with but that is a myth easily debunked. Mental strength is the product of Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, which is often considered to even trump the intelligence quotient, or IQ. It is a flexible skill that can be improved with effort and for those that wish to possess this coveted skill, it is equally important to know what not to do, as it is to know what to do, to achieve it. Here are 6 things mentally strong people with high Emotional Intelligence, EQ, never do —

Stay in their comfort zones

They are increasingly aware of their limitations and are constantly taking up challenges to push their boundaries, and master new things. Of course, keeping one's eyes shut to their weaknesses is infinitely more comfortable because no one likes to see themselves fall short, but complacency never leads to a high EQ!

Let fear control them

It is often said that bravery is nothing but being scared of something and doing it anyway. This is true, especially when it comes to one's career, and can involve taking on fears such as public speaking or trying out for a promotion. Mentally strong people acknowledge their fears but go ahead and also realise that giving in to their reservations would mean a sure loss; trying to overcome it at least gives them a fighting chance.

Stop believing in themselves

They persevere despite failures and learn from their mistakes instead of treating them as impenetrable barriers. They fight monotony and momentary feelings, as well as other peoples' negative comments.

Hold grudges or stay around negative people

Grudges bring negative emotions and stress, which can have drastic effects on a person's health over time. The negativity also clouds judgement and distracts them from their real focus. Similarly, being around toxic people can sap one of their energy levels. Driven people know the difference between lending a sympathetic ear and getting sucked into their self-pitying emotional spiral, and are careful not to toe the line.

Feel entitled or get jealous

The emotionally stable understand that the world is a meritocracy and they believe in working for opportunities rather than expecting to be served. They take responsibility for their successes and failures and do not feel envious of other people's triumphs because they are aware that other people's happiness does not take away anything from their achievements.

Allow people to dictate their happiness

Strong-minded people do not compare their success with that of others. They know that each person is different and will have a different success and failure ratio. Having said that, they also do not allow other people to control their happiness. Their motivation for success comes intrinsically and they take all external opinions with a pinch of salt!
