Confirmed: Chanchal Chowdhury will play Mrinal Sen in biopic
Noted actor Chanchal Chowdhury, who is currently enjoying the success of "Hawa" and the web series "Karagar," will portray Mrinal Sen in an upcoming biopic titled "Padatik" about the renowned director.
On the fourth anniversary of Mrinal Sen's death, the film's director, Srijit Mukherji, made the announcement on social media today, along with a picture.
"On the day you left your El Dorado for good, a few updates," Srijit wrote.
The filming of the Mrinal Sen biopic will likely start in January. Friends Communication and Big Screen Production are teaming up to produce it.
Srijit said in 2020 that he was going to make a web series about Mrinal Sen's life. The script was written by him during the quarantine. Later, Srijit decided to turn it into a feature film. Kunal Sen, the son of Mrinal Sen, gave the project his blessing and worked on the script with Srijit.
Mrinal Sen, like his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, was a pillar of the New Cinema Movement, known for his hard-hitting films that explored the dark corners of Indian society. They worked together to add a new aesthetic dimension to Indian films. Mrinal Sen was also regarded as one of the most accomplished parallel film directors – an alternative to mainstream commercial cinema. On December 30, 2018, at the age of 95, he passed away in Kolkata after a struggle with age-related ailments.
It will undoubtedly be a dream come true for Chanchal Chowdhury to portray a cinema icon like Mrinal Sen on screen.
