Film Censor Board to be abolished in the future?
Today, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the list of new committee members for the Film Censor Board. According to the existing laws, the new committee members will serve for the next one year. As always, the chairman of the committee will be the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Some of the new members from the industry include actress Sujata Azim, Director-producer Dewan Nazrul, producer Khorshed Alam Khosru, actress Rozina and actress-journalist Falguni Hamid.
On a global scale, there are very few Censor Boards, rather it is more common for countries to have Certification Boards. Certificates are assigned to films indicating whether a movie is appropriate for all audiences or for specific age ranges. This method prevents the obstruction of a film's release. Filmmakers and industry insiders in Bangladesh have long been advocating for this change to be implemented.
Speaking about this matter Khorshed Alam Khosru stated, "Even though I am a part of it, we have been asking for the abolishment of the Censor Board, for a long time. Our neighbour, India has a Certification Board. So this would be appropriate for the current time. Through this, no film will be banned. Filmmakers will receive an appropriate rating for their film, that is what the norm is now all over the world."
Khosru also noted that the eradication of the Censor Board might be on the horizon, as the decision has been passed to start the process of certification. According to the producer, there have been positive responses from the authorities, as they are already working on the logistics regarding this decision.
