Many netizens tried to draw parallels with a scene in James Cameron's 1983 film "The Abyss" in which an American submarine sinks in the Caribbean and a US search and recovery team collaborates with an oil platform crew to recover the craft.

The 'catastrophic implosion' of the missing Titan submersible has sparked considerable suspicion and also drawn global media attention.

Many users tried to draw parallels with a scene in James Cameron's 1983 film "The Abyss" in which an American submarine sinks in the Caribbean and a US search and recovery team collaborates with an oil platform crew to recover the craft.

Twitter users have found a sequence from the Academy Award-winning film "The Abyss" in which the submarine lowers into the depths of the sea, with the character Coffey (Michael Biehn) falling off the edge of the trough and being crushed within his submersible by the pressure.

One user mentioned Rebecca Keegan's book "The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron," which stated how the underwater portions in the film "The Abyss" were hailed as the 'toughest movie shoot in movie history.

"There's a James Cameron movie called 'The Abyss' made before 'Titanic' and 'Avatar' that was called the toughest shoot in movie history. All of the diving sequences were shot in the water. Both he and Ed Harris nearly died while filming," said another user.

In an earlier interview with ABC News, the "Titanic" director expressed his serious concern about the situation. "I'm struck by the parallels to the Titanic disaster, in which the captain was repeatedly warned about an ice field on a moonless night, and many people died as a result. For us, it's a comparable tragedy in which warnings went unheeded... It's incredible because it's happening at the same exact location as all the diving going on across the world. It's quite surreal," stated the director.
