AL to hold sit-ins in Dhaka today, tomorrow instead of ‘peace rally’

voter turnout in first phase of upazila polls

The ruling Awami League will hold sit-in programmes and processions in the capital at the ward level today and tomorrow instead of the "peace rally" scheduled for tomorrow at Agargaon.

"The peace rally has been cancelled since the old trade fair ground is unfit for use. Instead, we have decided to hold sit-in programmes and protest marches at thana levels today and tomorrow," Dhaka City (North) Awami League President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman told The Daily Star today.

Last night, Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League General Secretary Humayun Kabir told the media that the ruling party would hold a "peace rally" on July 31 in Agargaon.

The ruling party announced the "peace rally" after BNP declared that they would hold rallies in districts and cities across the country on July 31.
