Beware! Suarez to stay
Luis Suarez was an instant impact. Back from a surgery table four weeks ago and having trained with the team only for a day, Suarez appeared as lethal as before. He sat out the first match that Uruguay played against Costa Rica for not being fully fit. A desperate Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez had to take this Suarez gamble by playing against England on Thursday night and it clicked.
Still ill at ease, Suarez struck twice to put England on the brink of an exit from the tournament. Uruguay and England still have an outside chance of moving into the next round and they will look forward to the match between Group D leaders Italy and Costa Rica, who both have three points off one match.
It is in England, where Suarez took his game to next level playing for Liverpool. The best player of the season in the Premier League, earned praises and criticism alike for his goals and antics there. England were wary of Suarez, and Tabarez was more than happy when the not-so-fit striker delivered.
The baby-faced striker received criticism for a deliberate handball that stopped Ghana from scoring in the 2010 World Cup and was at the centre of racism and biting storm since then.
Ghana will never forgive Suarez. Dominic Adiyiah was about to put Ghana through to the semis in the final minutes of extra time, but Suarez leapt up and prevented the ball going in with his hands. The referee saw everything and sent him off. But Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty and Suarez celebrated wildly on the sidelines. That was not enough as Uruguay went on to snatch the victory in a shoot-out, with Suarez making faces.
Suarez continued to score and create controversy. More than often he was accused of racial abuse, diving drama inside the D-box, obscene gesture towards fans and what-not. Among his stream of antics, the next most publicised one was probably his biting Chelsea defneder Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League match!
Suarez has kept his team's hope alive still. Let's see what more he is up to. But go for goals only, Suarez!
