‘Moana 2’ sets sail in local theatres today

The long-anticipated continuation of the beloved story of "Moana" (2016) is finally over. The sequel, "Moana 2," made its grand debut on November 27 in theatres across the United States. However, the highly anticipated film debuts today across Star Cineplex locations in Bangladesh, as confirmed by a press release from the renowned multiplex chain.

Directed by Dana Ledoux Miller, Jason Hand, and David Derrick Jr, the sequel initially began as a concept for a television series but later evolved into a full-fledged theatrical release. The story reunites audiences with the fearless Moana, voiced once again by Auli'i Cravalho, alongside the return of Dwayne Johnson as the charismatic demigod Maui. 

The new song "We Are Back" from "Moana 2" has thrilled fans worldwide, premiering on Disney's official YouTube channels. Featuring Auli'i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, the track has been praised for its uplifting melody and heartfelt lyrics.

The teaser for "Moana 2", which premiered earlier in the year, promised a thrilling continuation of Moana's journey, highlighting her ocean expedition and a tense face-off with a shark. It ends with Maui joining her boat. The stunning animation and adventure-packed trailer have fuelled excitement, with advance ticket sales soaring.

Online ticketing platform Fandango has reported extraordinary pre-sale numbers for "Moana 2", worldwide. The film has emerged as the highest-grossing animated movie in terms of advance ticket sales this year, while also securing the fourth spot overall across all genres.

In addition to the much-anticipated sequel, Disney has also revealed plans to reimagine Moana as a live-action film. Set to be directed by Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail, the live-action adaptation will feature Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui.

The live-action film is scheduled to hit theatres on July 10, 2026, promising yet another grand chapter in the legacy of "Moana".
