WWE’s ‘Raw’ debut surpasses 'Squid Game 2' in Netflix US rankings
"Squid Game" Season 2, which broke viewing records upon its debut, has been surpassed at the top of Netflix's Top 10 list in the United States. The new addition of "WWE Monday Night Raw" has taken the top spot. This acquisition is expected to remain on Netflix for a long period, raising questions about whether it will continue to hold the position or if the initial surge is temporary.
The debut of "Raw" lasted a substantial 183 minutes, more than three hours, and included appearances by stars like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, John Cena, and Hulk Hogan among others. Unlike typical Netflix shows, this program includes traditional commercial breaks as part of its format.
Netflix has secured a deal worth over US $5 billion to air "Monday Night Raw" every week for the next decade. This agreement will bring hundreds of additional episodes to the platform, adding to the already 1,650 episodes of "Raw". Given the regularity of the show, there are concerns that it may become repetitive if it continues to dominate the number one spot each week.
"Squid Game" is continuing to perform exceptionally well. While the first-week viewership numbers have not been released yet, they are expected to be potentially record-breaking, similar to its early premiere. Season 3 of "Squid Game" is set to return in 2025, with a possible release as early as June, based on a brief leak from Netflix.
The series will lead into Netflix's other major releases later in the year, including "Stranger Things" Season 5 and "Wednesday" Season 2. With these three shows, along with "Raw" and other surprise hits, this could become a record-breaking year for Netflix.
The rest of the Netflix Top 10 list includes "Missing You", a new crime drama that has performed well, second to "Squid Game". "Virgin River", "No Good Deed", and the tidal wave drama "La Palma" remain on the lower half of the list. At the bottom are "Black Doves", the major hit from late December, and the newly added "The Equalizer" starring Queen Latifah.
A major milestone in professional wrestling occurred last Monday as WWE's flagship show, "Monday Night Raw", officially made its debut on Netflix. After airing for three decades on TV, this marks the first time that World Wrestling Entertainment's weekly live show is available for streaming viewers.
