Former Nagorik Committee leader announces new political platform

Ali Ahsan Zonaed, a former joint Convener of Jatiya Nagorik Committee, yesterday announced to float a new political platform in April uniting all political and social forces that supported the July uprising.
Zonaed, also a former president of Islami Chhatra Shibir's Dhaka University unit, made the announcement in his Facebook profile this evening where he claimed that he would be the chief initiator of the platform.
He, however, did not disclose its name.
"While the fall of Gana Bhaban on July 36 marked the beginning of a new era in Bangladesh's politics, the desired changes envisioned by many who participated in the July mass uprising remain unrealised… In this context, a new initiative has been taken to form a strong platform uniting all political and social forces that supported the July uprising," he wrote in his post.
Talking to The Daily Star, Zonaed said the platform would act as a political pressure group.
"Our aim is to implement the demands of the mass uprising. We will rally for ensuring the trial of the Pilkhana, Shapla, and July massacres, banning the fascist Awami League, the establishment of a corruption-free social and political structure, the creation of a communal harmony-driven Bangladesh free from Islamophobia, the complete dismantling of fascist frameworks," he said.
Asked whether the platform may be transformed into a political party, he said they would decide on these matters later.
Zonaed joined the civic platform of the July uprising activists, Jatiya Nagorik Committee, in November last year.
At the initial stage of the formation of the National Citizen Party, at least three factions were created in the Nagorik Committee over the top leadership. The ex-shibir faction in the Nagorik Committee reportedly wanted Zonaed as the second-in-command of the new party.
Amid such discord, Zonaed announced that he would not be a part of the new party just two days prior to the official announcement of the NCP.
