‘Criminal’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Laxmipur cops
An alleged criminal was killed and two of his associates were injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Laxmipur Sadar upazila last night.
Deceased Mohammad Jasim Uddin, 30, hailed from Dakkhin Maguri village in the upazila, was ringleader of a criminal gang locally known as Jasim Bahini.
The injured -- Delwar Hossain and Belgium Sumon of the same village– are undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital under police custody.
Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said police arrested them from their village yesterday afternoon.
Later, the law enforcers launched a drive in Duttapara area along with the arrestees around 10:00pm to recover hidden firearms, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a “gun battle”.
Jasim, Delwar and Sumon were caught in the line of fire while fleeing, the OC said adding that Jasim was found dead after the gunfight.
Six policemen were also injured in the incident, the police official said.
The three criminals are accused in several cases, he added.
