Around 66 percent of the girls in Bangladesh get married before they reach 18 years of age, and of them 20 percent become mothers by the time they are 15 years old, UNFPA Representative Arthur Erken said yesterday.
He said although Bangladesh had made much progress in decreasing child mortality and maternal deaths, a large number of girls were still vulnerable to child marriage.
These girls could become an asset for the country's economy if society gave them a chance to complete their education, be a part of the workforce and prove their worth, he told a debate competition focusing on “International Day of the Girl Child” at the capital's Bashundhara city.
Eight of the country's top colleges took part in the contest jointly organised by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Debate for Democracy.
Viqarunnisa Noon School and College clinched the championship.
