BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the Election Commission does not have the ability to hold the next general election in a fair manner.

The present EC is serving the government, Fakhrul alleged while speaking to journalists after placing wreaths at the party’s founder Ziaur Rahman at Jatiya Sangsad area marking the 39th founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, a pro-BNP body.

"The government has appointed people they like in the commission so that it can hold one-sided election to come to power," the BNP leader said.

Pointing at the upcoming city corporation election in Gazipur, Fakhrul said that 45 leaders and activists of the party were detained after they sent a letter to the EC to remove Superintendent of Police (SP) Harun-ur-Rashid from the district.

So, there is no scope to think that the elections under the present EC will be fair, he added.
