PM ‘provoking people’ against CJ: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of “provoking people” against Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha for his observation in the 16th constitutional amendment verdict.

“Please shun the path, otherwise consequence will not be well,” Fakhrul came up with the call while addressing a press conference at the party chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka this evening.

Fakhrul said several senior leaders of Awami League even the prime minister have been hitting the chief justice hard since the announcement of the Supreme Court verdict that annulled the controversial 16th amendment to the constitution.

“They (AL men) are even talking against the independence of the judiciary and threatening the chief justice to stay aside from his post. This is an ominous sign for the congenial political atmosphere of the country,” he added.

The country will plunge into an anarchical situation if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina speaks irresponsibly after holding a responsible post of prime minister, he said.

“As democratic political party, BNP believes in independence of the judiciary and its dignity,” he added.

BNP standing committee members Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed and several central leaders of the party were present at the press conference.
