Ershad’s son wins Rangpur by-polls

Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, the eldest son of late Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, today won the by-polls at Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency.

He bagged 58,878 votes while his nearest candidate BNP’s Rita Rahman 16,947 votes.

Besides, Mokbul Shariar Asif, nephew of HM Ershad got 14,984 votes, Shafiul Alam of National Peoples Party got 611 votes while Kazi Md Shahidulah of Gonofront secured 1662 and Touhidur Rahman Mondal of Khelafat Majlish bagged 924 votes.

Total 94,006 people of 4,41,224 voters cast their ballots in the election that began at 9.00 am and continued till 5.00 pm.

GM Sahatab Uddin, returning officer of the election and regional election officer in Rangpur, said told our Dinajpur correspondent that the turnout was 21.30 per cent.

Rangpur is a stronghold of Jatiya Party, from where its founding chairman HM Ershad was elected in 1991, 2008, 2014, 2018. Besides, his widow Rawshan Ershad and brother GM Quader also election as lawmaker from the constituency.
