Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, former Awami League lawmaker of Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency, today walked out of Tangail District Jail on bail after 34 months in two district Jubo League activists murder case.

After getting out of the jail around 8:45am, Rana left Tangail for Dhaka for placing wreath at the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mjibur Rahman at Dhanmondi Road no. 32.

On July 8, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court verdict that granted bail to Rana in the murder case, clearing the way of his walking out of jail.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after dismissing an appeal filed by the government challenging the HC verdict.

Jubo League activists -- Shamim and Mamun -- were killed on the orders of Rana and his brother Jahidur Rahman Khan Kakon in Tangail in July 2012, the investigation officer of the case said.

Mamun’s father Abdul Aziz lodged the murder case with a Tangail court on July 9 in 2013 against 13 people, his lawyer Advocate Rusho Mostafa told The Daily Star adding that Tangail Model Police Station recorded the case on September 21 that year as per the Tangail court order. Amanur was shown arrested in the case in May last year.

Previously, the former lawmaker’s bail has been upheld at the Supreme Court in freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.

According to the case, the bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader of Tangail, was found near his house on January 18, 2013. Police found evidence of Rana's involvement in the killing.

Rana was sent to jail after his surrender before a lower court in September 18, 2018 in connection with the case.
