DIU congratulates new President of IAU

Two delegates from Daffodil International University (DIU), led by Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, BOT, DIU participated in the 15th General Conference of International Association of Universities (IAU), jointly hosted by Chulalongkorn University, Asian Institute of Technology and Siam University, Bangkok, Thailand during November 13-16, 2016. Her Royal Highness Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn inaugurated the conference.

Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, DIU handed over a DIU souvenir to Dr. Pam Fredman, the new President of IAU and the Rector of Goteborg University, Sweden, and Dr. Dzulkifli Abdul Razzak, Immediate Past President of IAU and former VC, University Sains Malaysia and former VC, Albukhary International University, Malaysia during the closing ceremony of IAU conference.

 

BUFT Chairman meets UGC Chairman

BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) team headed by Muzaffar U. Siddique, founder Chairman, BOT, BUFT visited University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh on November 22, 2016. They had a cordial meeting with UGC Chairman Prof. Abdul Mannan where they discussed various issues relating to development of academic and professional excellence. During the meeting Pro-VC, Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, Registrar A N M Rafiqul Alam and Director, Development & Planning, Md. Mujibur Rahman were present. 

 

5th National WUB ComTech Festival ends

Department of Computer Science and Engineering of World University of Bangladesh (WUB) organised 2-day long 5th National WUB ComTech Festival. The closing ceremony was held on November 25, 2016 at the Panthapath campus. The festival was chaired by Prof. Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, VC; A. K. M Mozammel Huq MP, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs graced the occasion as chief guest. 

Prof. Dr. Musfiq M. Choudhury, Secretary, BOT, Russell T Ahmed, Senior Vice President, Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) and Kazi Hasan Robin, Head of the CSE Department were present as special guests. Prof. Dr. M Nurul Islam, Pro-VC, delivered the welcome address. The winners were awarded with certificates, crests, medals, prize money and gift coupons. 

 

National seminar on SDGs at NSU

A national seminar on "Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges of Implementation in Bangladesh" was held on November 23 at North South University (NSU) in joint collaboration with the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and Public Policy and Governance (PPG) Program, NSU, under the Department of Political Science and Sociology. 

The aim of the seminar was to stimulate the students of the Public Policy and Governance Program to understand the transition from MDGs to SDGs and its internalisation to the national plan of Bangladesh and to highlight the implementation challenges. Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Distinguished Fellow, CPD presented the keynote paper titled "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Process and Key Issues". 

Prof. Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director of CPD made an introductory speech while Monirul Islam, Deputy Chief, General Economics Division (GED), Planning Commission, GoB, Asif Ibrahim, Former President, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Prof. M. Mahboob Rahman, PhD, Dean, School of Business & Economics, NSU, Prof. Sk. Tawfique M. Haque, PhD, Director, Public Policy and Governance Program spoke as discussants. The business session was moderated by Prof. Salahuddin M. Aminuzzman, Adviser, Public Policy and Governance Program. Azim Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, BOT, NSU spoke and shared his views with regard to quality education. The seminar was presided over by the VC of NSU, Prof. Atiqul Islam, Ph.D. 

 

CIU-Royal Cement Corporate Talk holds first episode

The first episode of CIU-Royal Cement Corporate Talk series titled "Voice of an Entrepreneur" was held at Chittagong Independent University (CIU) campus recently. The series is being organised by CIU in association with Royal Cement Limited.

Aameir Alihussain, Managing Director of BSRM Group of Companies, graced the first episode as the key speaker while CIU VC Dr. Mahfuzul Hoque Chowdhury was present as the chief guest.

The session was also addressed by CIU Trustee Board Member A. Quaiyum Khan and Faisal Nasir Khan, Chief Communication Officer of Royal Cement Ltd. Dr. Nurul Absar Nahid, Dean of CIU business school conducted the session. In the event, BSRM Group Director Sabin Aameir, Prof. M. Ayub Islam, Dr. Syed Manzur Quader, Dr. Mahmud Hassan, Engr. Rashid A Chowdhury, Moslehuddin Khaled, Saifur Rahman, Dr. Zillur Rahman of CIU were also present.

 

CS Fest 2016 at AIUB

American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) completed 3-day long event "AIUB CS Fest 2016" on November 22-24, 2016 at FST Building. The event is arranged by the AIUB Computer Club under the guidance of the Department of Computer Science of AIUB. 

VC Dr. Carmen Z. Lamagna handed over the crests and certificates to the winners. The event ended by a cultural programme organised by AIUB Computer Club (ACC).

More than 800 participants from different faculty of AIUB, different schools and colleges participated in this event. Participants competed in App Concept Presentation, App Showcasing, Poster Contest, Idea Prototyping (HCI), Programming Contest, Interdepartmental Mathematics competition, ICT Quiz, and college/school project showcasing. 

AIUB Computer Club is grateful to Therap (BD) Limited and Dynamic Solution Innovators (DSi). Besides, media partners Kaler Kantho, HIFI Public and Radio Shadhin 92.4 FM.

 

BRACU launches German language course

The BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University (BRACU) has launched German language course which is a noteworthy addition in the list of language courses that BIL offers. The course launching seminar for dissemination of information regarding this initiative was held in the BRACU auditorium on November 24, 2016. 

In her welcome speech, Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director, BRAC Institute of Languages emphasised on the importance of learning German language in order to pursue higher education and explore career opportunities in Germany. The country offers numerous Master's programmes having English as the medium of instruction and BIL promised to help students in taking IELTS preparation who would enrol in the German language course. 

Currently, BIL offers Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French and Arabic language courses.

 

UIU achieves UN Momentum for Change 2016 award

Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, Director, Centre for Energy Research of United International University, has been awarded "UN Momentum for Change 2016" at COP 22 in Marakkech, Morocco. He is the team leader and principal investigator of the award winning research pilot project "PV DC Peer-to-Peer Smart Village Grid".

The research project was co-funded by World Bank and IDCOL. A Bangladesh-German start-up SOLshare provided the technology and implemented the project and NGO UBOMUS is operating the research pilot project at Shakimali Matborkandi village of Shener Char union of Jajira upazila of Shariatpur district.

In the award giving ceremony, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressed that these are the activities that can be the examples to the whole world. This year UN has declared 13 projects as the UN Momentum for Change Light House Activities.
