Shornomanob

Channel: Channel i

Directed by: Abu Hayat Mahmud

Script: Dr. Moinul Khan

Cast: Mosharraf Karim, Mehazabien Chowdhury

We have seen stories which revolve around an innocent person getting caught up doing bad deeds and finding it difficult to get out of the criminal life. Shornomanob is a story just like that, with Mosharraf Karim playing the character of a gold smuggler who gets caught by the airport security after a series of interrogation. The drama begins with the Bangladesh Customs Intelligence thoroughly tailing a supposed “shorno manob” who is suspected to be a gold smuggler. Once they confirm their target, they go on a relentless pursuit and eventually manage to crack him, recovering a large amount of gold in the process. During the plot development, we get to see why the gold smuggler chose this kind of lifestyle, and through flashbacks, we see his reason being a simple one: amassing money so he can live happily with his beloved one (played by Mehazabien Chowdhury). The serial thus depicts the consequences of being a criminal, along with the fact that despite the purest intentions, evil deeds can never be overlooked.

However, the natok does not end with the criminal simply getting his right deserves and good intentions going completely unrewarded. Shornomanob proves itself to be a story of redemption, as the final scenes show Mosharraf Karim's character managing his own little shop, built after two years of constant struggle. His hard work and dedication to his honest cause was what enabled him to turn over a new leaf, and finally give him the courage to face his beloved once again; this time not as a criminal, but as a righteous self-made man.

Moving to the flaws, there weren't many. The story was well-rounded and sustained a rather engaging sense of suspense from the get-go, and combined with the commendable acting of the cast, the serial was entertaining to watch. However, despite the natok being a Mosharraf and Mehazabien starrer, there was very little of Mehazabien to be seen, which was quite a shame since her character and background could have built a lot better with more screen-time. Since majority of the scenes focus on the confrontation between the gold smuggler and the airport security, a little of that could have been cut down to focus more on where Mosharraf's character hailed from or explain his desperation to be a criminal better. Nonetheless, the drama wrapped itself up within the given timeframe quite well, thus providing a compact yet thought-provoking story for everyone to enjoy.
