Shakib in a league of his own

With an impish smile on his face, Shakib Al Hasan said, "Has anyone else done it?" when told he was the first Bangladeshi to have scored 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in T20Is during the presentation ceremony after Bangladesh's thumping 60-run win over Australia in the fifth and final T20I in Mirpur today.

To answer Shakib's query, the presenter then mentioned that Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga has also achieved the feat. And Shakib, with his smile broadening, replied quickly, "I guess he [Malinga] didn't score 1000 runs."

The wily Shakib knew what he had done and was well aware that his record was a unique one. Not only the first Bangladeshi, but Shakib also became the only cricketer in the world to reach the double of 100 wickets and 1000 runs in T20Is during their game against Australia today.

In doing so, he also became the first Bangladeshi and only the second player in the world to have scalped 100 wickets in T20Is.

The only other player to have reached the 100-wicket milestone in T20Is is Sri Lanka's Malinga, who took 107 wickets in 84 matches.

Shakib also reached the milestone in his 84th T20I but his uniqueness was that he had also scored 1718 runs during that time, averaging 23.53 with nine fifties and a high score of 84 in the format.

Shakib, who smashes records every now and then, often doesn't even keep track of his achievements. But this time the champion all-rounder knew he was on the cusp of adding another feather to his cricketing cap.

And he did not shy away from admitting it.

"Sometimes I keep track of records," said Shakib at the end of his interview during the presentation ceremony.

Shakib's exploits with the ball, figures of four for nine in 3.4 overs that included a wicket-maiden, helped Bangladesh hand Australia their most humiliating defeat in T20Is. Shakib led the Tigers in bundling the Aussies out for 62 in 13.4 overs -- their lowest-ever total in T20Is.

A dominating Bangladesh had already sealed the five-match series with three wins on the trot with yesterday's victory seeing the Tigers take the series 4-1.

And such a big-margin win over the mighty Aussies was only materialised due to Shakib's roaring comeback with the ball in hand after some people had deemed Shakib the main culprit for Bangladesh's only defeat to Australia in the series -- a three-wicket narrow loss in the fourth T20I on Saturday.

The 34-year-old was hit for five sixes in one over by Dan Christian in a game where the Aussies were chasing a paltry score of 104 for nine. He ended up giving away 50 runs without taking a wicket in his four overs -- his worst ever figures in T20Is -- in that game.

And just two days after his worst showing with the ball, Shakib ended up redeeming himself with the only resounding way that he knew.
