Vidal, Boateng fume over Marcelo handball
Bayern Munich were ousted for the second year by Real Madrid as the Spanish side went through to the final of the Champions League at the expense of the German side.
Joshua Kimich had given Bayern the lead very early in the game but two Karim Benzema goals either side of half-time sank Bayern before they resurrected a real challenge with a James Rodriguez goal to equalize the score.
A key moment in the match arrived during the dying seconds of the first half when Bayern felt they were denied a penalty following a Marcelo handball. Joshua Kimmich’s cross was blocked by Marcelo’s hand and Bayern players appealed vehemently but the referee chose to play the incident down and did not hand Bayern a penalty with the score at 1-1 on the night.
Arturo Vidal, who did not travel with the side to Spain was furious and termed the incident as ‘criminal’ while Jerome Boateng, who missed the game with injury also was wrote on twitter:” No penalty?!? Come on.”
At the end of the semifinal tie, Real’s Marcelo conceded that he was lucky to get away with the handball. Asked if the ball hit his hand, Marcelo said: “Yes, it hit my hand.”
Asked on whether he thought it was a penalty, the defender said: “Well, if it hit my hand, I'd say so.
“But you guys know that I don't talk about the referees. Many times, refs have ruled against us, and now, I can't come here and talk about his performance again, because when they rule against us I don’t talk about it, you know. I imagined you'd ask me that,” Marcelo added.
Before the second leg, Bayern coach and player Thomas Muller had spoken about refereeing with the later delving into the incidents from last year and also the contentious decision that led to Juventus falling out of the Champions League this year.
"They (referees) already have too much pressure, everyone knows what happened here last year, with two offside goals for Madrid and the penalty for Juventus.
"The atmosphere shouldn't affect them, I don't think it matters,” he had opined before the game.
