Mbappe wants to do justice to number 7 shirt
19-year old French star Kylian Mbappe became a star player at the World Cup after his four goals at the tournament helped France to their second World Cup title. The French forward’s star is on the rise and he was handed the number seven shirt by PSG in a big unveiling on Thursday where the French outfit also revealed their new away kit for 2018-19 season.
The 19-year-old striker was also furnished with a new hashtag, #K7LIAN, that will no doubt transform into a personal brand in the coming months.
The young Frenchman first showed his capabilities while playing for Monaco in the Champions League as his exploits garnered the attention of the world, eventually paving the way for a move to Paris Saint-Germain last season. He formed a lethal partnership with Neymar and also become the second-most expensive transfer in football history, only behind his Brazilian teammate. The move potentially cost 180 million euros. Given he has become PSG’s second biggest star, coupled by the fact that he has been a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo since his childhood, Mbappe said that he wanted to do justice to the number seven shirt.
"I thought for a long time that the number was not important, it was only on the pitch that it mattered but it is an indication of your ambitions, the player you want to be," he told the club's website.
"I will try to continue my progress on the field and I think for me it was the right time to change number, I think it's a kind of affirmation. Number 7 is a legendary number, many great players who have worn it. I hope that I will be able to do this number justice on the pitch."
"I will continue to work to continue my progress and see where it leads me but, with a number like this, we start well! I came to Paris Saint-Germain to leave my mark, there is a beautiful story to write and this is just the beginning. We are here again for good years and I hope that we will be able to do great things together."
