Didn’t feel anything negative: Shakib on injury
Bangladesh ODI skipper Shakib Al Hasan had been nursing a Grade-1 tear which he suffered during the match against New Zealand. Today, Shakib gave an update on his injury at a press conference a day before the South Africa match at Mumbai.
The Bangladesh team management have been pretty vague regarding the extent of the injury. Shakib had sat out the match against India but batted in the nets sessions yesterday. Despite that, focus on his injury would not die down as he had also partaken in a net session before the India match.
"When I practiced yesterday, I didn't feel anything negative. I will train today and if everything is okay then I am fit," Shakib said.
Shakib did not face problems with batting session however fielding, running and bowling would be on the agenda for the ace all-rounder in today's practice session. He informed he would be giving a fitness test.
"Yes. Today's fitness test [will be important], since I didn't face any problems yesterday while batting and I don't think I will be facing any problems with batting today. I haven't done any running and if I don't face issues when running then it's all good," he clarified.
There had been a lot of curiosity regarding his unavailability for the India game. Shakib said, that just as paceman Taskin Ahmed -- nursing a shoulder injury -- had been rested in the last match, the matter was about whether the Grade-1 tear injury will be aggravated if the skipper played the India game.
"Yes obviously there was some discomfort and I wasn't in a good condition. It was also important to understand whether playing that [India] game would make me miss the rest of the matches or maybe miss one or two games, like in Taskin's case, and if that would be a good thing. Those were the things we had to decide on and till now I am in good condition. There is no pain and I feel physically fit. So it's just about me testing myself out there a bit," Shakib said.
The all-rounder also informed that Taskin will not be playing the match tomorrow. "The doctors and physios have decided to give him rest for two matches. We are hoping that we will have him available for the next four games which is very important for us," Shakib said on Taskin.
Bangladesh take on South Africa tomorrow hoping to turn the tide and get their World Cup campaign back on track following three defeats in the last three matches and Shakib's availability would be huge boost to the team's cause.
