Govt to undertake project to intensify anti-militancy campaign

The government will undertake a project to intensify anti-militancy campaign across the country, Religious Affairs Minister Motiur Rahman told parliament today.

“A project proposal for carrying out anti-militancy publicity is awaiting approval. Once the project is approved, strengthening of anti-militancy campaign would be possible," the minister said replying to lawmakers’ queries.

In the scripted reply, the minister also said discussions over social unrest, terrorism and militancy are being held before the khutba (religious sermon in Juma prayers) by the imams at 55,180 mosques under the mosque-based children and mass education programme and other imams across the country.

Motiur Rahman also said discussions and seminars on anti-terrorism and militancy are being organised at divisional, district and upazila levels.

"The campaign against social unrest, terrorism and militancy is going on by the imams of Imam Training Academy," he added.

Citing a survey conducted by Islamic Foundation in 2008, the minister said while replying to another query that the number of total mosques in Dhaka city is 5,776.
